Band Bio's

SCOTT SMITH (the vocalist of Cuttlefish and the writer of its songs) began performing by singing in a teachers band called “That’ll Teach You.” His songwriting experience began in his classroom when he wrote literature-based songs for his students. Then in 2010, he wrote, directed, and produced a musical called “Freak Dance.”

Sometimes people, usually behind his muscular back, accuse Smith of writing weird songs. They say to him, “For God’s sake, why the heck would you write a song about the mating challenges of a shellfish or, worse yet, a song about complimenting Adolf Hitler’s artistic abilities?  That’s just too weird!”

And to this accusation, Smith’s answer is this: “I don’t try to write weird songs; I try to write interesting songs.”

SCOTT STECHEL the lead guitarist has had a lifelong love for the guitar and for making music in a band context. His love for the song and for creating melodic statements along with a desire to let go in an improvisational jam is what keeps him going and feeds that hunger for musical expression. Cuttlefish provides a happy vehicle for that desire. The songs are original and each band member gets to contribute to making these songs come to life and become an entity of their own.

JACOB STECHEL the steady rhythm guitarist behind Cuttlefish is a quick study in music making. He was given his first guitar at age 15 and learned to play quickly. He also plays bass and drums but his love for guitar and for playing songs has been an ongoing passion. Cuttlefish with all its great songs is a happy match for Jacob’s guitar playing in which they wouldn’t exist without his steady rhythms and grooves
